Have a safe Memorial Day weekend.
I have made three missionary journeys to Kashmir (India) and am preparing for my fourth. I have gone to Kashmir: looking for "lost sheep" (kidnapped trekkers); as a street preacher; to help widows and orphans; and to consult with two of the worlds leading doctors regarding the drug addicts and mentally ill I help here in U.S. I will describe my missions in detail later. Next week I will start posting my general impressions of three journeys to Kashmir (India).
In 1996, the government established a council for rehabilitation of the victims of militancy with the objective of addressing the problem in an effective manner. However, with the installation of popular rule, the humanitarian agenda was diluted to exclude the orphans and widows left behind by militants. Amazingly, such a prepostrous mindset is apt to leave such destitutes to languish in unmitigated distress. What impact it would have on their otherwise wounded psyche, particularly of the orphans, could be anybody's guess. Over the years, the much hyped rehabilitation council has been reduced to an appendage of the social welfare department.
One of the major areas of concern is the growing destitution that has assumed monstrous proportions over the recent years. With the unabated insurgent violence taking its toll, the number of those widowed, orphaned, disabled and dispossessed goes on swelling by the day. A rough calculation puts the number of orphans around 50,ooo and of widows and disabled about as many. The magnitude of the problem is awesome with hardly any viable mechanism available to respond effectively. The moribund state machinery betrays a shocking lack of priority. The cash starved government has enough money, not for the needy, but for frivolous pursuits.
